Laessig Fashion

LÄSSIG sets the bar for real sustainability in the baby and children’s sector

LÄSSIG, a family business founded in 2006, offers high-quality, sustainable and innovative products for the whole family. To ensure transparency and a genuine commitment to sustainable farming, in 2021, LÄSSIG was considering starting their own cotton farm and then they met the Raddis®Team…

Within one year we developed together a complete transparent seed-to-shelf value chain, and co-created a super soft circular baby product made from rain-fed regenerative in-conversion cotton, launched at the Kind + Jugend in September

TOGETHER WE ACTIVELY DO MORE GOOD

OUR COLLABORATION

Based on our mutual understanding that doing business is about building long-term relationships and taking responsibility, we started our journey together in 2021.

PARTNERS

As a partner of the Raddis®System, LÄSSIG is directly collaborating with 13 tribal farmer families in Vizianagaram, Andhra Pradesh, South India, covering 25 acres of farmland.

SWADDLES AS NATURAL AND SOFT AS A BABY’s SKIN

The cuddly soft swaddles are dyed with natural plant-based ingredients or printed with GOTS approved printing inks on the natural cotton colour.

DESIGNED WITH
CIRCULARITY IN MIND

From the GMO FREE seeds to the final stitching yarn, we take care that the material could go back to nature again.

All material used is 100% Raddis®cotton:

  • the soft muslin fabric,
  • the labelling
  • the stitching yarn.

Together we actively grow a regenerative cotton value chain from seed-to-shelf

With our first year of collaboration, working with 25 acres of farmland, we had to overcome three cyclones during the most delicate time of the growing phase from flower to mature cotton bulb.

We harvested approx 10.000 kg of seedcotton for the limited edition of more then 10.000 LÄSSIG swaddle sets and created positive impact together

RAddis Cotton NON_GMO seeds

At the beginning of each new season, RAddis® farmers receive non-GMO cotton seeds and intercrop seeds against 0% interest. It is important that these seeds are of good quality so the plants will be resilient and healthy.

First week_RaddisCotton_plant_2022-08

After sowing the farmer must wait 8-10 days to see the first cotton germinate. Raddis®cotton is grown without synthetic fertilizers and synthetic pesticides in a regenerative system, this means that Raddis®cotton can contribute to carbon sequestration in the soil. Also, our cotton is rain fed, without irrigation!

Maize_Multicrop_Raddiscotton_2021_10_picture 5b

Raddis®cotton is grown in combination with other crops such as maize, cowpea, red gram, castor, marigold, and ladyfinger. This has a lot of advantages in terms of pest & disease management and soil fertility. In addition, it can serve for additional income or for household consumption.

After flowering cotton forms a bulb that will burst open and ripen into mature cotton fibres that are ready for picking. Raddis®cotton is picked by hand in 3 rounds of harvest.

From seed to cotton bulb
it takes 6 – 8 months from sowing to harvest.

Ginning Raddis raw cotton b 2022

Raddis®cotton is harvested and collected at farm and village level.

Ginning Raddis 2022 (1b)

At the ginning mill the Raddis®cotton fibres are separated from the cotton seeds. The cotton seeds are kept separate to produce cotton seed oil.

Yarn sizing_RaddisCotton (1b)

Cotton fibre is spun into yarn at the spinning mill, during the process the fibres are cleaned further, carded and combed to make beautiful and even Raddis®yarns. The Raddis®team has a close look at every added value step

Muslin fabric Laessig_RaddisCotton 2022_3

This is a double muslin Raddis®fabric. After weaving the fabric is desized and made ready for dyeing and printing. You can see we love the natural colour of the Raddis®cotton and use GOTS approved chemicals for all processes.

From cotton bulb – to soft muslin swaddle
It takes many steps, each step is overseen by the Raddis Team

RaddisCotton_NAtural_Muslin

Soft double muslin Raddis®fabric that absorbs moisture very well, it is the ultimate fabric for babies but loved by grown-ups too!

Natural Dyeing_madder_RaddisCotton_2

Instead of using synthetic dyes, we choose to use only plant-based dyes for the solid colours. The colourfastness is less rigid, but definitely healthier

Roots, seeds, bark, and flowers can be used to come to beautiful natural colours. We use marigold, madder and Kaddukai for our colours.

Swaddle_Burp_Blanket

Result is a beautiful soft swaddle set, designed to be circular: 100% Raddis®cotton, cotton stitching yarn and a cotton label. Even the pouch is designed to be re-used.

As final step the muslin swaddles are dyed with natural plant-based ingredients and printed with GOTS approved printing inks.
