In today’s industrial landscape, cotton has been often reduced to a mere commodity. Its rich ecological and cultural context, its relationship with the land, the people, and even the waste it generates, is often ignored. But at Raddis, we're rewriting this narrative.
The farmers we work with are cotton growers, while at the same time they’re regenerating ecosystems, reviving ancestral wisdom, and transforming waste into worth through the ancient alchemy of biochar.

The Problem: A System Out of Balance
For decades, cotton farmers across India have burned cotton stalks after harvest, which was seen as the fastest, cheapest way to clear fields for the next cycle. But this practice comes at a steep environmental cost: 1 ton of cotton stalks burned releases approximately 1.4 tons of CO2 equivalents. On top of that also methane and nitrous oxide, (far more potent than CO₂), are released through open burning.
This destructive cycle treats valuable agricultural residues as waste instead of what they truly are: untapped potential.
The Indigenous Answer: Biochar! What is Biochar?
Sometimes, the future is hidden in the past.
Over 2,500 years ago, Indigenous communities in the Amazon created “Terra Preta”- dark, fertile soils enriched with charred organic matter. Their technique, known as “slash-and-char,” locked carbon in the soil and nourished crops for centuries. In India, traditional farmers practiced similar methods, enriching soil and natural concoctions with biomass - charcoal blends long before industrial agriculture erased these practices.
Biochar is the modern rediscovery of this timeless technique. By carefully burning organic materials like cotton stalks in low-oxygen conditions, we create a stable, carbon-rich material that sequesters carbon for over a hundred years and rejuvenates soil health.


Science Backs It Up
Recent long-term studies have validated what Indigenous farmers have known for millennia:
- A 7-year study found biochar from straw increased seed cotton yields by up to 30.7%, and improved fiber strength by up to 13%.
- These benefits are linked to better nutrient and carbon allocation in the plant, resulting in more fruiting branches and higher boll formation.
But the magic doesn’t stop in the soil.
Biochar reduces greenhouse gas emissions, improves drought resistance, enhances microbial life, and even opens doors to future new income opportunities.
A New Kind of Cotton Farmer: Eco-system Stewards
With support from field-trained biochar experts, Raddis Cotton farmers are practicing the handling of their agricultural waste streams, turning cotton stalks into biochar, improving their yields and soil, and building resilience against climate shocks. We are currently developing the connection between Raddis Farmers with the carbon markets, creating a future additional revenue stream based on biochar credits.

As sustainability claims flood the fashion world, few brands talk about biochar, despite its immense potential. Many turn to bioenergy or offset schemes that often miss the mark on circularity and traceability.
Biochar, on the other hand, is traceable, place-based, and rooted in both science and indigenous wisdom, honouring the past while shaping the future. It’s about regeneration, not just reduction.
